The Power of Language: Shifting from Stigma & Scrutiny to Support

Language is a powerful tool and can be used in ways that harm or heal. This free training will explore the role of bias, power and control, cultural humility, nameism, the oppressive origins of child welfare, and the connection to common child welfare language. Strategies for reflection and exploration of bias, internal dialogue, and applying knowledge of trauma in communication will be included. More details below! ↓

Learning Objectives:

  • Define cultural humility and explain its connection to language in child welfare.
  • Examine dynamics of power and control in child welfare and the impact on language.
  • Explain internal and external narratives and identify how these perspectives and biases may show up in conversation.
  • Understand and explore the impact of nameism in a multicultural society.
  • Build capacity for self-reflection and mindfulness to apply new language and put skills into practice.
