Post-Adoption Support Services for Adoptive Families

Adoptions Together, a program of Paths for Families, fully supports the unique needs of our clients and their desire for open adoptions. We understand that navigating contact with your child’s birth family can be filled with both rewards and at other times be challenging. These services are structured to help families build their relationship in a way that is healthy and supportive. If you are interested in pursuing these services, please contact our Post Adoption Support Counselor, Claire Beaman.

ChildConnect: Adoptions Together families can login to ChildConnect to upload letter or photo updates (called a Lifebook) or direct message with birth parents here. Email Claire at cbeaman@pathsforfamilies.org if you’ve lost your log in, missed a deadline for a Lifebook, or need any technical assistance with ChildConnect. ChildConnect is now available in the App store!

Search and Reunion Services

Search and Reunion services for both open and closed adoptions can be facilitated by Adoptions Together. Through this service, clients can work with a trained counselor to connect with their child’s birth family. It is essential to Adoptions Together that the relationship between birth and adoptive families is nurtured in a way unique to their needs. Because of these unique needs and the laws surrounding Search and Reunion, the counselor collaborating with you on this case will do a full needs assessment for your family and your child’s birth family.

This service is for families who have not had direct contact with their child’s birth family. If the child’s adoption was finalized in the state of Maryland, the adoptee must be 21 years old to search. If the child’s adoption was finalized in the state of Virginia, the adoptee must be 18 years old to search.

The following is included in this service:

  • Zoom or phone intake meeting with a trained counselor.
  • Extensive case research prior to contact with the birth family.
  • Locating the birth parent’s most recent contact information by online investigative services, if necessary.
  • Updates regarding the status of the case.
  • Attempts to contact the birth parent(s) over social media, phone, email, and/or mail.
  • Zoom or phone intake meeting facilitated by a counselor with your child’s birth parent.
  • Mediation of contact between birth and adoptive families (determined by case).
